On view in the first floor display cabinets:
A recent acquisition of the Historic Clothing and Textiles Collection within the Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors Department at UGA, the Montgomery Collection includes over seventy garments and accessories. Owned and worn by Eleanor (Ellie) Morgan Montgomery Atuk, a resident of Atlanta, the collection includes pieces by Yves Saint Laurent and Bill Blass.
Written by Eleanor’s daughter Jeannette Montgomery Barron, My Mother’s Clothes: An Album of Memories is a collection of photographs taken by Jeannette. Jeannette was able to reconnect with her mother while she fought Alzheimer’s by bringing pieces of clothing out and discussing them with her. Ellie would remember specific details about each garment and relive her glamorous past. According to Patrick Kinmonth who wrote the introduction to My Mother’s Clothes, “These photographs are still lives. In them a mother still lives. A daughter and artist is defined. And a stilled life is restored.”
When Ellie passed away in 2007, her spacious closets could barely accommodate the exquisite gowns, suits, skirts and blouses she collected over a lifetime. Currently on display are a few examples of the contents of her closet, including an Oscar de la Renta gown and a little black dress, which Eleanor wore for years.
