Author of scandalous book to speak

November 11, 2010 – 10:51 AM

Richard Jay Hutto, author of “A Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and Madness in the Heart of Georgia,” will speak at 4 p.m. today in the first floor Reading Room of the Main Library. The book recounts a scandalous 1960 murder in Macon. The trial of Chester Burge would spawn the first testimony in Georgia history of a black man disclosing that he had been a white man’s sexual partner. Burge would be acquitted of murder, but convicted of sodomy. And yet, this Southern grotesque tale would take even more twists and turns before coming to an explosive conclusion.

Hutto did part of the research for the book in the Hargrett Library.

Refreshments will be served.
