Season’s Greetings!

December 1, 2009 – 10:12 AM

With another Thanksgiving under our belts, and Christmas songs flooding radio stations everywhere, it seems the 2009 holiday season has officially begun! For December’s “Outside the Box” feature in the Russell Library gallery space, it seemed fitting to offer some holiday cheer with an assortment of greeting cards drawn from our collections.

Greetings from the White House…
Produced by Hallmark, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official greeting card from the White House in 1953. The tradition took hold over the next seven years and has been followed by every President since. Over the years, the White House mailing list has grown exponentially. In 2008, President George W. Bush reportedly sent greetings cards to 1.4 million people!

Our collection of season’s greetings from the White House includes cards from the Eisenhowers, Kennedys, Johnsons, Nixons, and Reagans. For some more visuals on these and the other cards on display, check out “Outside the Box” on the Russell Library blog ( Or visit us in person, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm; the Russell Library is located at the west entrance to the Main Library building on North Campus. For more information call (706) 542-5788.

  3. I spent about an hour looking for a great quote from a noted leader about Thanksgiving this year (to share on Facebook) and found it a fascinating insight into how the president’s tied those messages into the current struggles and crises of their time. The greeting cards are a neat idea too.

Sometimes the cards from the congressional members and senators have been a howl, too.
